Workshop and studio practical activities

One of the key features of our Club is access to a dedicated Hut which we can use for meetings and practical workshops. This means we can run practical activities or meet as smaller groups whenever convenient (unless there is a pre-planned event as part of the programme). The Hut has studio facilities which members can use individually subject to booking (and having completed an induction/familiarisation session).

Interest/Learning Groups

Many of these practical sessions, as well as other meetings both in the Hut and elsewhere, are usually organised and run by groups of members who are interested in learning and practising photography in specific areas – though any member can attend any “interest or learning” group session. New groups can be formed when new areas of interest are proposed and there is sufficient involvement of members. The activities for these groups are not included in the programme as they plan their own meetings to suit the convenience of their members – but meetings are announced in the weekly newsletter sent by email to all members.

Monthly Set Subject Competition

This is intended as a friendly internal challenge to encourage members to take more pictures and be creative using a new subject every month. The theme of the subjects for this year is based on letters of the alphabet. Members often use this competition as a “nursery” to test out new images and ideas. It comprises 12 monthly rounds (July 2023 – June 2024) which are open to all members. Members vote for their favourite images via an online poll. The top three images from each round go forward to an overall final in June. The competition provides a useful source of images for the Club to discuss and critique as learning and creative media.
See programme for subject and the dates for submission, voting and results each month.

Club Competitions (with external judge)

Through the season we have a Digital (projected) and Print Competition in the Hut and a Digital Competition on Zoom – all with an external judge. Open to all members. Images can be of any genre/subject in colour/monochrome – no constraints. We usually have a review meeting after competitions to discuss the judges’ feedback and suggestions. See programme for details of upcoming dates and judges.

Zoom Talks Programme

Zoom talks were first introduced as part of our online programme during the pandemic. These have now become a regular feature in particular during the bad weather months when members somehow prefer the comfort of meeting from home. Zoom provides a great tool for accessing interesting and entertaining speakers from all parts of the UK and overseas.
